Scrappin Outback : Wave Rock Retreat

I have just enjoyed a whole weekend off work and away from home.....at the Scrappin' Outback Wave Rock Retreat in Hyden.  Again Karen needs to be congratulated on an amazing weekend of prizes, classes, fun, laughter and most of all spending time with friends.

I am normally a tutor at this retreat teaching 2 classes (one layout and one off the page class) but this is the first time in the last 9 retreats that I have been a participant.  There to play and enjoy time out doing something that I love but have neglected in recent months due to being so busy with my Photography business.  Someone asked me yesterday if I preferred to teach or not, my response was quote "the jury is still out on that one".  It is still out, I get so much enjoyment from teaching and sharing my knowledge and skills with everyone but at the same time I can't tell you how nice it was just to be on the other side of the fence and get to play and learn from others.  It's like I've rediscovered what I love about the world of paper crafting.

Anyway enough about me.....here's just a few snaps taken at the last minute yesterday afternoon just before I left to come home.

The tutors this time were the amazing Lis Cassey, Gayle Smith, Karen Smith and Julie Van Oosten.  They all produced the best projects and we all appreciate the effort it takes to come up with these classes.  Thanks ladies!

I managed to complete 10 pages whilst at the retreat - some of them classes and some not.  When I get the chance to photograph them I might be back to share.

I just want to thank the policeman that pulled me over on the way home just out of Hyden (yes I was speeding, just a little) - RBT and a caution to use my cruise control on 110km/hr in future.....phew!

I have a heap of paper work and editing to do so I had best be off and get that done.

Have a great week everyone!

News & Housekeeping

My "Get your camera off auto" workshop is now into it's third lesson and everyone is doing so well. Next session we all participate in a walkabout and photo session complete with model. That should be fun!

There has been plenty of interest in this workshop and interest is being taken by Tomorrow's Memories for another that we are hoping to run before the end of the year. So give them a call to reserve your spot.

Or if you would prefer a one on one day workshop with me then that is also available if that suits you better. If this is something you might like then please contact me via email and we can discuss your requirements.

Workshop, Retreat etc.

Sorry about neglecting you, but things have been rather busy around here on the business and personal fronts.

My "Get your camera off auto" workshop at Tomorrow's Memories is now officially full and we are taking expressions of interest for a second course which is a possibility if we get minimum numbers. Ring TM's on 9279 2183 if you would like to attend this informative workshop.

So I have been finalising course material this week and I'm so looking forward to meeting all the participants (some new friends and some old). If you are on Facebook then login and RSVP to my event at Sharon Manning Photography and meet some of the other participants. You will have to "like" me here first.

Don't forget to charge your camera's batteries and bring along your camera manuals, notebook and pens.

This Friday 6th and Saturday 7th August, Sharon Manning Photography will be on display at The Shops in Ellenbrook. So if you are in the area then please come by and say hello. You will find me just near Brumby's Bakery!

On a personal note - last weekend we spent Xmas in July with 21 of our friends at our dear friends' cottages in Balingup - Balingup Heights - Brian and Deb have made the "tree change" and hosted us all for our annual get together....kids and all. Altogether there are 26 of us with kids ranging from nearly 6 to nearly 18! It was a fabulous weekend of walking (my calf muscles are still suffering), laughing and lots of eating. Thank you Vanallens for your hospitality and great company on Sunday night too.

This one was taken on one of our morning walks around the property. I love how the misty light is catching the tops of the ferns to the right. There are some more to come once I get the chance to go through them.

One last thing!

The Scrappin' Outback 11th Wave Rock Retreat has been announced for 22nd-24th October in Hyden. I will be attending as a participant this time, which I am so looking forward to.

I'm taking expressions of interest for those that would like to book a Photo Session in Hyden. I will only be avilable prior to the retreat, not after. So drop me an email if you are interested!

I think that covers everything around here for the last few weeks. See you next time!

Weekend Wrap Up

The Scrappin' Outback 10th Wave Rock Scrapbook Retreat was once again a huge success due to Karen's amazing organisation and commitment to this wonderful weekend of creativeness. Thanks Karen and your support crew of many friends and family for your hard work.

We had 3 Tutors doing 7 classes over 3 days, Lis Cassey, Lynne Herbert and myself. There was no shortage of workshops to choose from and in fact many ladies managed to do all 7 and get their own pages and projects done in between.

I taught 2 Layout classes and 1 Off the page class and all were overwhelmingly supported which was great to see. Here's a full view of my projects....

For the 10 Things layout I took over 500 photos on Friday of around 35 ladies and babies, edited them and Karen printed them off so that we could use them for the class which was scheduled on Saturday morning at 9.00am. This was a HUGE success and so much fun. Thank you to Lis who assisted me and held the "really big round silver thing" in just the right spot and then directed our ladies how to stand and where to look - SUPERB Job - I couldn't have done it without you. And here they all are....

I have seriously loved teaching at Hyden every 6 months, I have made so many friends. So it is with sadness that I have decided not to Teach anymore (for the time being), not because I don't want to, but I feel I need a break. I will still attend the retreats but as a participant, which I am very much looking forward to! I wouldn't miss it for the world. So, I will see all you lovely ladies in October!!!!!!

OK I still need to unpack so I best be off and do just that!

Sweet Vintage : Retreat : Storm

I went hunting on Etsy last week for some crochet flowers and found so much more at Sweet Vintage - my goodies arrived yesterday....beautifully wrapped....

with these wonderfully coloured crochet and fabric flowers inside....

here's some more info if you would like some too....

Thanks Jodie! I can't wait to put them to good use.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well the instructions for my classes are done for the Wave Rock Retreat this weekend and I have already packed for them too. Just need to pack some supplies for my own creativeness now. To tell you the truth I have only just unpacked from the last one in October. See you in Hyden on Friday ladies!!!!!!!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you didn't already know we had the most amazing storm come through Perth last night which caused so much damage. Cars have been destroyed, roofs have fallen in and flooding is widespread. As we are on rainwater we always let the first little rain flush out the pipes and clean the dust of the roof. Then once it's been raining a little we cap them again and the clean water then runs into the tank. Last night's rain was so heavy that I couldn't get the caps on because their was so much water rushing out. Like trying to cap a geyser. It's funny now but at the time I was cursing Steve being away for work and not being here to do this rotten job (believe me it's not the first time it's happened this way).

As I dodged the lightening and ducked from the thunder overhead it took me 2 attempts to cap the main pipe. I was drowning alive. Gemma came to help me but even together we couldn't get the darn thing on, yelling at each other to be heard over the sheer noise of the storm. Eventually after waiting for the rain to ease just a little (and almost crying thinking about the water we weren't catching) I managed to get it on. Times like these I wished I could have taken a photo - I'm sure you can imagine though.

I dragged in the furniture from the edge of the balcony (don't know why cause it was already soaked much like me) and after a warmish shower (we have solar hot water - cloudy day means we need to put the booster on which had not been put on),I first thought about gettin my camera out and captured this from the verandah....

I know we have been doing the rain dance for the last couple of weeks but so much in one go was just diabolical. We have two dams on our property, one very low and one was empty which is now half full. I know there are alot of people and businesses alot worse off than us, so I do hope it's not too long before they are back on their feet.

OK I'm back to some packing. This might be my last post until I get back so have a great weekend everyone. March is nearly over!

Hyden Retreat Sneak Peeks

Here are a couple of sneak peeks for the 2 layout classes I will be teaching at the Scrappin' Outback Hyden Retreat on the weekend 26th - 28th March!

"Sisters" uses the Fancy Pants - Vintage Valentine range of papers and I have teamed them up with some handmade embellishments and distress ink to give it a little "shabby chic" feel (said with french accent).

"10 Things" in 2010 at the 10th retreat - do you see a connection? This layout can be about anybody but seriously consider doing it about yourself (please!). I have chosen "10 things you might not know about me". My list (yes I know what your thinking - Sharon's a list maker!) contains some things that even my daughter Renae did not know. So get thinking about your "10 things" or someone elses "10 things" - this class is going to be alot of fun! It uses the Amy Butler Lotus blue range of papers and embellishments - YUM!

There is one more "Off the page" project to come so stay tuned for some more sneak peeks very soon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week sometime by Bloglines stopped working and so it was time to shift my RSS feeds into Outlook and have a tidy up. In doing so I came across some very timely and interesting reads and I thought I would share a couple with you......

This one at Scott Kelby's Blog which lead me to this one at Nick Onken's - Shoptalk.

Home

Wow! What a week it's been - I've learned, laughed, cried, been amazed, inspired, overwhelmed, blessed and embarassed, but not in that particular order. I seriously do not know where to begin except to say thank you to Karen, the community of Hyden and everyone who attended the Scrappin' Outback retreat last weekend, it was a huge success and a credit to Karen, Amy and their support crew of many, both scrapbookers and non-scrapbookers. I had SUCH a wonderful time! Thanks too to Kath & Kim (you know who you are) - you are both such good fun and I think I am still talking to you. I was in very good company with Lis Cassey and Gayle Smith and between us we taught 8 classes in less than 3 days, Gayle taught 4 in all - a great achievement. I was overwhelmed with the response to my classes at this retreat especially the Mixed Media Sampler. Di managed to get nearly 3 of them done on Sunday afternoon and hopefully everyone learned something they can use again and again.

I must also mention the 6 families that welcomed me into their homes and farms to photograph their gorgeous families - I had so much fun meeting you all. Your open arms made my job that much easier. I have some 3500 photos to get through, which is a little daunting but expected. I will post some sneak peeks up on here as I work through each family. So stay tuned for lots of yuminess.

As I mentioned at the Retreat I am looking at returning to the Hyden area during the April school holidays and already have 6 families names down - so if you are interested then please email me and I will put you on the list and reconfirm again late Feb - early March.

I have managed to get some rest today as my big girl had her Valedictory dinner last night and she finishes school tomorrow - well they have muck up day and are off to the beach for the day! In less than 10 days she starts her TEE and by the 13 November she will be finished school forever - wow this has crept up on me and I'm sure it won't take me long to get around the idea but I'm feeling a little old right now!

So the next month is going to be rather busy around here with editing and end of year dance concerts and school functions - hopefully I will be back with lots more to share in the coming weeks.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

It's going to be a goody!

I have now seen all the amazing classes that will be on offer at the Scrappin’ Outback, 9th Wave Rock Scrapbooking Retreat and they are all absolutely fantastic. If you are attending then you are in for a real treat.

Here is my final class sneak peak - A Travel Album - designed to be made before your holiday so that you can collate it as you enjoy your vacation and that way you won't miss all the little details. If you have already been on your holiday and have happy snaps to include then you will need photos 6x4 or smaller.
If you would like to see the other classes being taught by Lis Cassey or Gayle Smith then go here and here or here.

If you would like to join us all for this very special retreat then Contact Karen Smith on 98805300 or email scrappinoutback@bigpond.com to book and for details and prices. Updates for the retreat can be found at Scrappin' Outback's blog.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My big girl turned 17 yesterday! Unfortunately she is in the middle of her Mock TEE Exams and had to endure a Maths Exam on her birthday of all days. We will be celebrating on Sunday with a family dinner so she is very much looking forward to that. Stay tuned for some photos. I feel old!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm listening to:

This girl has an awesome voice!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm still reading:

Struggling with this one a little - I might have to put it down and come back to it as I have these three waiting in the wings....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And some self portraits for a project I am working on at the moment!

The B&W one was taken looking into a mirror and then I flipped it horizontally in Photoshop so my moles were on the right side of my face. The colour one was taken at my desk using self timer. I don't look too bad considering I have had Gastro for 2 days! No one else in the family - just me - thank goodness really as Renae has had exams. I'm on the mend though and picking up this beauty tomorrow should cheer me up :-)

Eclectic post I know but it's been an eclectic week.
See you next time!

Mixed Media Sampler

Here's a sneak peek at one of my classes at the Scrappin’ Outback, 9th Wave Rock Scrapbooking Retreat. I love teasing you all - I can't wait to teach this one, there are lots of techniques so be prepared to get messy. The project once completed can be framed, used as a journal/album cover - well anything you want really.

I'm finalising my second class (another off the page project) in the next couple of days so hopefully I will be back with another teaser very soon.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hyden in October

Some exciting news!

I have just confirmed that I will be attending the Scrappin' Outback retreat in Hyden 16th-18th October. Karen is madly in organising mode for this very exciting event as it will be the celebration of 5 years in business for Scrappin' Outback - awesome achievement! I always love this retreat and catching up with friends that I have made over the last couple of years, not to mention the fantastic classes that continue to raise the bar each time, from fabulous tutors like Lis Cassey, Alli Paterson and Gayle Smith. Seriously you will not want to miss this one!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I have some even more exciting plans. More you say? Yes more!

I have had some enquiries about doing photoshoots in Hyden and surrounding towns so I will be extending my stay both before and after the retreat to do just that. So, if you are interested in having a family or portrait shoot done then please contact me to discuss and reserve a time and place. I'm happy to come to you (I will be basing myself in Hyden) and can photograph your family in their environment where they are the most relaxed. Or if you decide on a different location then that's fine too. I will be putting together a special package just for these bookings and you can email me on sharonmanningdesign@bigpond.com for this information or any queries you may have.

Feelgood Monday

Thought I’d share what’s making me feel good this Monday.

I finished knitting my first ever sock (
this sock ) for Steve – I need a rest because the tiny pointy needles I use really hurt my fingers – I’m sure Steve is thinking he won’t be getting the other one! Oh well, he will just have to keep changing feet to keep both warm for the time being.

I’ve started this vest from Patons for me in chocolate brown - the pattern is challenging me at the moment but the bigger needles are alot more comfortable.
We cleaned out the shed on Saturday so that we could accommodate a new/second hand purchase - one of these.....

and we were distracted by a couple of boxes of Steve's Mum's belongings - in one we found this!

M.J.F (Margaret Joy Fewings) gold embossed into a beautiful leather case and inside was the Kodak Six-20 "Brownie" D. What a long way we have come with camera's! This holds so much meaning for me and something I will treasure forever. I just wish it could speak, I'm sure there would be a few tales to tell.

On the weight loss front I'm 14.6kgs down and 20.4kgs to go and I'm feeling amazing - so amazing in fact I spoiled myself of Saturday and bought this dress in purple from Jacqui E...it's ok it was on sale!

The look on Gemma's face when I came out of the change rooms in this dress just made me buy it. Losing weight has to be your own decision and your mind set has to be just right, but the support of my family and friends is so very important to my success and I am one lucky lady to have that.

A couple of things I have noticed....my Enagagement and Wedding rings fit now (no eternity ring yet, but I'm working on that!), I want to exercise, I don't have that many clothes in my wardrobe that fit me anymore, I don't crave chocolate anymore (or sweet stuff), I'm eating so much better and I had a few glasses on wine on Saturday night and didn't feel guilty. How does that James Brown song go? "Whoa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now I feel good, I knew that I would" HA HA HA HA...sorry got carried away.

I'm so looking forward to the "8th Wave Rock Scrapbooking Retreat" this weekend in Hyden. Can't wait to catch up with all the lovely ladies that attend from all over the countryside. Lots of laughs and good times coming up. Oh and classes too from Lis, Gayle and myself - yes we do work while we are there ( little bit ).

New Music added to my eclectic iTunes library in readiness for the drive out to Hyden -

Warning - Some of the songs on this album are addictive!

thanks to Viv!

I have been a fan of Beth Orton for some time now ( thanks to Steve ) - Interesting Album that I think I'll need to listen to a few more times before I decide.
Well I think that's enough rabbiting on for this Monday. Might not be back for an update until after the weekend so stay safe and have a great week!

My family thinks I'm mad

I have been watching tv of an evening and feeling quite twitchy, like I should be doing something......so now I am! This.....

You can get the free pattern here and I'm using an Australian wool called Heirloom in 12 ply.
My family keeps saying, "why are you knitting in Summer?"

Here are my sneak peaks for The 8th Wave Rock Scrapbooking Retreat 27th – 29th March 2009....

and

Not long to go now ladies and all will be revealed!
Have a great week!

Three!

On Saturday I attended a 12 hour crop (I think I lasted about 10 hours) at Tomorrow's Memories - it was a lot of fun and the theme of the crop was "Australia Day" - I'll leave the rest to your imagination! Anyway the girls did a terrific job as always in hosting the day with lots of prizes, specials and FUN!
I was on a mission and managed to get 1 layout completely done and 2 others 90% finished. So this morning I finished them all off and thought I might share.....
I'm sorry if they are a little wonky but the evaporative air-con here is playing havoc with my layouts - they are straight I promise!

The girls started school yesterday - Renae Year 12 and Gemma Year 10 - and for the first time since we moved out to Bullsbrook they have a door to door bus. No more driving for me!!!!!!! You see they are at school in Ellenbrook which is about a 25 min drive each way - 2 hours in the car a day. But no more - the government finally came to the party with School Buses which run right past our front door. Yesterday, I didn't go anywhere and just enjoyed the peace and quiet at home. Very nice indeed.

Tomorrow's Memories have asked me to be their guest designer so I have been working on 2 layouts - 1 down and 1 to go - this afternoon's project. Hopefully I will be back sometime soon with some sneak peaks.

Also the lovely Karen from Scrappin' Outback is well into plans for the next Wave Rock Retreat to be held in Hyden on 27th - 29th of March 2009. If you are interested then please contact her - these weekends are awesome and such good value.

Well that's about it for now - Take care and if you have been sewltering in the heat then try and stay cool.

She's 16 today!

I'm glad I've had my first cup of tea for the day because blogging this one is not going to be easy!

My eldest daughter Renae turns 16 today! Happy Birthday sweetheart, I hope all your dreams come true.

After fighting to keep you for 5 months during my pregnancy, you were born at 23:23 on 23rd September 1992 weighing 9lb 7oz and our world changed from that moment on. You have grown into a beautiful young lady with a caring, thoughtful and all round gorgeous nature that we are extremely proud of. As you enter the next stage of your life and alot of changes are going to happen in the coming years, we wish you all the love and happiness you deserve. Love Mum, Dad and Gemma xxx.

Renae had a big 16th party with all her friends on Saturday night complete with bonfire....

I was informed after everyone went home that "it was the best party ever". Phew!

Last Friday night Gemma performed at her School Dance concert and was the star of the show with 9 appearances throughout the night and she was named Best Dancer for Year 9! Well done to my Dancing Queen! Steve got to see her solo competition routine and was blown away - he was speechless! I hope to take a photo of her with her trophy on the weekend. We have her Bullsbrook Dance Academy concert this Friday night, Competition next Tuesday at Karrinyup and then we are finished for the year! I'm looking forward to a break from dancing and I'm sure Gemma is too.

I'm working on my workshops for Hyden and should have some more sneak peaks later in the week.

We also have our Nieces wedding on Sunday which we are all looking forward to, she is going to make a stunning bride! Hopefully I can snap a few pictures and post up next week. I might even get a family shot of the four of us if I'm lucky!!!!!!!! Now that's rare.

So many posts in one week!

I know, I know, scary that I have posted so much this week. I think it's a good thing mind you, my poor blog gets neglected when I immerse myself in other stuff, but then I have heaps to blog about when I do come to blog. OK I'll shut up now.....

Here's a sneak peek of one of my layout classes for the Wave Rock Retreat in October....
Titled "Sunrise" I don't think you will be disappointed - let's just say that it's a simple layout made to look "fancy". It's using the Mira range from K&CO, one of my favourite manufacturers. So if you want to come along then you had better contact Karen asap! Lis has some peeks are her classes on her blog too if you are interested. I'm working on my other classes very soon and will have some more sneak peeks in the next week or so.

Some frustrating news yesterday that Scrapworks are discontinuing all stock except for their "Exposed" range of clear acrylic albums. This includes their Anthologie albums and as some of you know I swear by these albums and in fact are the only ones I (and Judy) use for commissioned work (and my own!). What are we going to do? I have searched the web for a replacement but nothing seams to compare in style and quality. AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH.

I have something exciting in the pipeline (well I think it's exciting) - When I actually make some more and photograph them being modelled I will post up here. Has that got you thinking? No it's not a new bikini range!

I got to photograph this little one yesterday again.............she's just so adorable and I discovered she is extremely ticklish ! Thanks for a lovely day Lis.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Photowall

Back in July Lis sent me a link to this post on Tara Whitney's blog. As soon as I saw it I was off finding TTV's to apply digitally to my selected photos and I knew exactly where it was going to go.

It has been up for a week or so now (thanks to Steve) and it really makes a statement in our high ceilinged lounge room. You can get an idea how large it is from the door way. The frames are 50x50cm from Ikea called Clips and I got the photos printed here in Perth at Fitzgerald Photo Labs . They are a quality set-up and the service was excellent. I emailed the photos in via their Web Courier service and picked them up the next day! Yes I paid a little more than if I had ordered them over the web, but with my photography shoots on the up I thought it was high time to find a reputabel printer that I could align myself with! A tip though, when you edit your photos to size i.e. 50cm x 50cm actually make them a little larger - say by 3-5mm as some of the frames differ and this way you can trim down to get a perfect fit!

The Wave Rock Retreat is on again in October and I am working on the classes in the next week, so hopefully I will have some sneak peeks for you very soon.
